UAE RIDE: 1985 Toyota Sprinter Trueno

The last and most impressive generation of rear-wheel-drive Corollas; the 2-door AE86 series is a very solid and loved machine among many enthusiasts in the world. Many AE86s or ‘Hachi Roku’ are still being used as street and track warriors despite the fact this generation is a quarter of a century old.

Its hard nowadays to find something that matches what this car offers; small & affordable rear-wheel-drive performance for the people.

There is probably 1/2 a dozen of these in the UAE and this is one of the popular ones: a 1985 Sprinter Trueno.

This 1985 Sprinter now seems like a long term restoration project and it would be a joy to see it come back to life. A lot of planning, work, time and money would need to go into it; a challenging project but still worth it.

It was bought fitted with a 20 valve blacktop 4AGE fuel injected engine which bent its valves and was replaced by a carburetted 16 valve 4AGE, sourced locally. A lot of lose wiring lie here and there from the previous fuel injected engine. The 16 valve is mated to a 5 speed gearbox with a short shifter kit and the differential is a 2 way LSD.

The interior is almost completely stripped with exception to the nice Recaro seats, Nardi steering-wheel and the original dashboard that is breaking down.

Exhaust is an HKS straight pipe. It would sound stunning with that carburetted 4AGE.

The suspension: in the front is Techno Toy Tuning with fully adjustable coil-overs with Tein camber plates while the rear is a set of lowered springs.

The wheels are 15″ x 7 & 15″ x 7.5″ Watanabes.

The car now seems like a long term restoration project and it would be a joy to see it come back to life. A lot of planning, work, time and money would need to go into it; a challenging project but still worth it.

  1. Woah. I never knew there was one in the UAE ! :O
Really one of my favorite cars ! How much was it ? Where did you buy it from ?
I’m sure it started its life in the USA :p Or somewhere else ?
Too bad the original Dash is going to be removed 😦
    and a 2 way LSD !? That’s Sick bro ! just Sick !

    • Yes, it is a long term project and the owner is one of the top writers in wheels magazine in the UAE.

The car recently got an engine swap, the current engine is a 20 valve black-top 4AGE.

The original dash wont be removed but it does need some re-conditioning as it is falling apart and such parts are hard to find for a car that is more than 2 decades old.

  2. Love this car, I still rememmber 1st time saw it back in 2006 (He was some nice asian guy) he left UAE in 2009 I guess and sold this car to his friend (the current owner) lol and this guy refused to sell his 86 to me (If you reading this, rememmber I’m the guy who called you from Qatar)
Nice project thu 😀 and hell yah its hard to find a gcc spec 86
