You might ask yourself, why is it a special car? Does it really deserve a community of its own? Its not that fast and It doesn’t have anything new or special. After reading this, please, do tell me why you would or would not like to buy one of these.
This Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ or Scion FRS (depends on which market it’s sold at and which dealer you are buying it from) is special because of these 5 reasons for a start:
1. Its well balanced sports car, with a low center of gravity & almost 50:50 weight ratio.
The car is using a boxer engine for a reason and that is to make it achieve an extremely low center of gravity.
2. Simplicity, basic design, built to be a classic driver’s car.
The car does not have ‘more than necessary’ stuff packed into it. The driving experience is natural, allowing the driver to feel the car and enjoy doing all the driving. Plus the fact it is not over-powered or under-powered makes it a perfect car for any driver of any skill level. Several auto blogs and magazines have praised its well balanced driving dynamics. Many Enthusiasts are proud to see that a car maker is actually reviving simple cars that reward the driver with a natural driving experience; something we dearly miss.

The BRZ has the same sweet-natured nimbleness as a Mazda Miata or a Porsche Boxster. That sensation is helped by the fact that, like the Miata and the original Boxster, the BRZ’s engine simply cannot outdrive the chassis. It only takes a few miles along your favourite canyon road to start wishing you had 100 more horses to play with. The car stays flat through the turns, and when pushed very hard it will oversteer, but the onset is smooth and progressive. The low mass–Subaru says production cars will weigh a feathery 2500 pounds–means you can brake later for turns, carry lots of speed through them, and still nail apexes like a sharpshooter.
3. The history and culture that revolve around it.
Its been like quite sometime since Toyota produced a sports car, we almost lost hope thinking that they took the path of “Camry” (like we like to call it). Last thing they ever produced was the MR-2 and after that it was over; which is a shame seeing that such car-maker did have a long and interesting history in motorsports and sports cars, starting from the classic Toyota Sports 800. The 86 was not only meant to revive that image but It also is meant to return the culture of the affordable RWD sports car the, AE-86; a car that have become a favored choice among motorsport, tuning and racing enthusiasts, until today. The AE-86 is not only an Icon car but it also is one of the few remaining RWD shells that are getting refurbished and rebuilt by enthusiasts due to the lack of such segment of cars in the market. The car carries the name “86” as to revive the racing and tuning culture that revolved around its predecessor, the AE86.
4. Built to be an affordable rear-wheel-drive sports car.
US Magazines so far are reporting prices ranging from some $ 24000 – 25000. The only car at such range, last I checked, is the Mazda Mx-5 and the market is starving for more affordable and compact RWD sports cars. We hope this one fills the gap well.
The car is the first front-engine, rear wheel drive vehicle with a four cylinder boxer engine with direct injection, ever made in history. Besides the fact it revived Toyota’s image as a sports car maker after more than 5 years of absence from that segment. The car is also co-developed by Subaru and Toyota, and it is sold under three badges as the Toyota 86 (GT86 in Europe), Subaru BRZ & Scion FRS (for the US market).
Most importantly if this car is to be a commercial success; then it can potentially be a game changer in the sports car market. Other car-makers will start to find that over-powered, over-priced & ‘over-gadget-loaded’ cars are not the key to the hearts of many car enthusiasts out there.
